this turquoise cabochon is unbacked and the base/back of the stone isn't perfectly level, with the 'loss' likely a natural variation because of the vein running alongside the base of the cabochon

in good vintage condition
when this ring was sourced someone had soldered in a silver sheet behind the stone as a sort of backing that hid the back of the stone. that feature was carefully removed, which revealed natural imperfections alongside the back of the stone and evidence that the stone is stabilized in the setting with jeweler's epoxy, which is common practice for this style
the setting has heavier patina, especially on the underside of the dome
the stone is a natural turquoise and features deep natural veins. turquoise is a softer stone, so the stone isn't a perfect oval, which is evidence it was hand cut. there are some surface-level fractures that could either be damage, or a feature of the stone. it's hard to tell. luckily, this stone size isn't hard to source, so if ever this stone disappoints it could be swapped with another stone fairly easily by a jeweler
