this chain is so special and it was chosen from a stash of unusual silver chains hoarded by a jewelry dealer decades ago. 

an Italian anchor chain in chunky, heavy, sturdy sterling silver. it's like a weighted blanket for your neck. 

Italian sterling silver necklaces are very often plated with a darker metal, and this one's plating is wearing off, leaving one matte/grey side and one shinier side. the inconsistent wear patterns are most visible on the end pieces

this is a vintage Italian chain, which are often plated with rhodium or a similar white metal. this one was plated with a greyish metal, which is wearing off inconsistently. You could opt to have it re-plated, but it cannot be polished off because the coated metal is stronger than the soft sterling silver it's covering — price reflects this inconsistent surface
